Give a little bit...

Saw this idea and just had to share. Maybe you’ve already bought all of your gifts (congrats! We’re not even close!) or maybe you have a list a mile long (goodness knows we asked for a few things....) But either way, I just love how this simplifies the gifting portion of Christmas. We’re always looking for ways to minimize the financial strain of the holidays, while still keeping it fun. These four groups really seem to highlight key sentiments for exchanging gifts....Want and Need are perfect, and I’m a sucker clothes and books! But it would be fun to customize the tradition with other categories too; maybe “Make” for some homemade crafts or goodies, or “Surprise” for those special gifts that defy categorization. I think this would be an excellent idea for kids, they seem to get so many gifts they can’t keep track anymore! Any other good ideas for keeping gift giving simple and meaningful?

Sharing Christmas

One of my real-life-first, blogging-second friends Megan hosts a fun tradition called Sharing Christmas in which a group of bloggers give virtual tours of their homes all decked out for the holidays, and share details about their families' traditions. This is the second year for the event, but it's my first time participating. I'm excited to share a bit of our Christmas with all of you! So let's start the show....

It's fitting that this is my debut year in the online "Parade of Homes" because this year is host to a lot of other Christmas firsts. We've decorated for Christmas before, but this is our first house, so it's given us the chance to expand our meager decorations to a grander scale. First stop on the tour- Our beautiful house all lit up!

We've never put up exterior lights before, and owned only a single wreath (more on that beauty in a minute!) so we looked at our "naked" house and brainstormed what would look best. We decided to go for a simple, classy look. Each window got a wreath with white lights, silver bows and bells. Our only other light is a single green spotlight. You may not be able to tell here, but it really does light up the whole house, and looks great with our green front door! Some may prefer bolder looks (my neighbors have a amassed a not to subtle inflatable shrine to the season) but I'm kind of a "less is more" kind of girl when it comes to exterior lighting...Unless you're going to go Griswold. Then hats off to you!

Though my house may not show it, lights are one of my favorite parts of Christmas. But I think it has more to do with tradition than the decorations themselves. After our Christmas Eve church service, we all pile in the car (usually several more passengers than is legal) to drive around and look at Christmas lights. We have a couple favorite stops, and everyone picks their favorites. I love seeing what people come up with- from tacky to beautiful, I really love them all. Not on the tour though- My mom's house. My step dad has nixed Christmas lights in the last few years saying he's saving his money for his grandchildren rather than using electricity. Maybe he'd be proud of my humble display?)

Worth every penny!

I love my sparkle berry wreath- Our only previous existing piece of outdoor decor. It used to brighten up the halls of our Cincinnati apartment building, and now it has a more permanent home. But you're probably getting cold standing out side while I yap about wreaths....Let's head inside!

This is our foyer table, with a bit of festive flair (The Spanish welcome is a year-round sentiment. Perhaps I should invest in a Feliz Navidad sign?). The main attraction is the advent calender which was lovingly made by my mom a couple years ago. It has a theme each week and a corresponding bible verse to read each day (along with an ornament to decorate the tree). I think it's a cute version of a similar tradition I had since I was tiny. I loved putting ornaments on our advent "tree" and couldn't wait for the 24th to come so I could put the star on the top. It's even better now because the verses serve as a daily reminder of what the Christmas season is truly about.

Before we move on, I should probably mention the biggest "first" this year. Yes, even bigger than the new house. We've decided to that rather than traveling this Christmas, we're going to stay home (weird...this is our home now. Not just some transient place that we’ll be until I finish school, or until we get tired of renting. It’s a real home.) Since I was born, I've spent every Christmas at my parents house (minus a couple years that we switched it up to go see Dustin's family). The details changed a bit each year; sometimes we'd travel to my grandma's, sometimes I'd spend it at my Dad's house, but I have always spent it with my family. But this year, everyone's schedules didn't quite align, so we're taking the opportunity to take a bit of a break and just stay put.
Now, it's not that I don't absolutely adore our families (I do! A lot!) but I'm actually really excited about having some time as a family of our own. Sometimes the holidays seem so geared towards kids, or at least childhood memories that I feel like our Christmas doesn't count until we have children to share our memories with. I think it'll be really nice to have a chance to do something totally new, and start to make some traditions all our own. I'm sure we'll borrow a lot from our parents' way of doing things, but there's something pretty magical about making this Christmas very us. (Note: to all our family- don't cry we'll see you the week after Christmas, when the great Tour de Bowden resumes!)
Now, on with the tour! Not pictured on our yuletide journey is a mistletoe ball hanging in the living room doorway. I'll avert my eyes while you steal a kiss from your sweetie. But don't linger too long, the living room awaits!
I'm probably similar to some of you in that I only decorate the first floor of house. I haven’t collected enough stuff to go everywhere (though that is rapidly changing!) so I make some big statements in the common areas and hope that's enough. The lit star in the corner is a prop I developed for AE stores last year (one of the perks of working in visual merchandising!)
In a non-Christmas related note: Do you like our new rug? It was kind of a spur of the moment present to each other from our last trip to Target. We didn't anticipate a need for a cart though, so Dustin was forced to carry it around on his shoulders while I continued the search for the Christmas gifts we were actually there for. That's what men are for, right?
New for this year is a group of glittery pears (another impulse buy at Target. That place is dangerous!) This is part of my ever expanding pear collection that shows no sign of slowing down. We do not, however, have a partridge. I guess I have to draw the line somewhere. The bowl was previously home to a fall display of mini pumpkins. Not sure how it'll be reinvented for spring yet. Hmmm...
Another first this year- we have a REAL fireplace! Two years ago our stockings were hung on the windowsill (with care!), last year we had a mantel, but this is the first real working fireplace we’ve had. I desperately want a fire, but we haven’t had the flue cleaned (I don’t even really know what that means) so I’m not positive it’s safe. And I imagine chimney sweeps charge a pretty penny this time a year. But without a fire, where am I supposed to sing my yuletide carols?

I made our stockings a two years ago, and I like them, but I want to make new ones. Possibly out of die cut felt or maybe I’ll learn needlepoint. My childhood stocking is a needlepoint Santa made by my grandma, and it’s so beautiful. These are cute, but not exactly our forever stockings. But I LOVE my deer stocking hooks. There’s a buck, a doe and a baby fawn (I’m saving that one for when Dustin surprises me with a puppy...yeah right!) Our stocking tradition is pretty basic, we all open them first, at the same time. I like to open gifts one person at a time (which drives Dustin crazy) so you can see what everyone got, and enjoy the process, but stockings are just a free for all! The only problem this year is that my mom (I mean...Santa) usually fills the stocking for the family (even her own!) so we're on our own this year. We've yet to discuss the plan...maybe Santa really will have to show up!

Moving right along...In my opinion, no Christmas would be complete without a bit of glamour- Cue the chandelier!

We have the candles out all year round, but the light fixture got some extra special holiday flair. I absolutely love our dining room, but I think I love it even more now that it's all glittery and aglow. Truth be told, we use the table more for game playing than fancy dinners, but we might have to change that for Christmas. I've never cooked for the holidays before, and typically Christmas Eve is spent rushing off to church rather than sitting down for a meal, so I don't have a lot of tradition to pull from. My only frame of reference is Thanksgiving....do I just swap the turkey for ham? It looks like I'll have to stop by the other Sharing Christmas homes for some recipe ideas (or dig the Holiday issue of Rachael Ray out of the back seat of my car!) Maybe all the sparkles will distract Dustin from a lack-luster meal? Knowing his affinity for food, not likely.

ooooh....shiny!
And now it's time for our final stop, and the ultimate highlight of any Christmas tour, the tree!

Ta-da! The one thing I am truly passionate about when it comes to Christmas decorations (other than glitter) is that trees should be REAL. For years and years, my family went and cut down a tree of Griswold proportions. (seriously....I could have saved us all some time by skipping this post and just having you watch Christmas Vacation. Seems like my memories come from there as often as they do from real life!) Getting a tree truly is one of my favorite things to do, but this year we saved a little time, and a lot of money and went to Lowe's. They had a TON of trees, and really good deals (sorry neighborhood boy scout troop....next year we promise!) and I actually love our tree. Little full, lot of sap.

As for the decorations, it seems like everyone has a tradition when it comes to ornaments. I wish I could say the same, but it was never really that way growing up. Of course we had the ones I made, some keepsake ones, and some favorite ones, but I didn't get one every year, and my family didn't really have any sort of rhyme or reason to acquiring them. I've wanted to create some sort of tradition with Dustin, but we've been slacking on it for a few years. Our families have given us a few, we've bought some generic items here and there, and the rest are (more) props I designed for work. Between that hodge podge, the colored lights, and the circus-tent inspired tree skirt, we just might have the tackiest tree in the neighborhood. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

We did buy a new ornament this year, to commemorate our new house (are you sick of hearing about that yet? I might never tire of it!). You would be surprise how few house ornaments JoAnn Fabrics has: this one was it. But we've decorated it, and now it's hanging proudly on our tree. (oh, and I know it's not technically our first Christmas, but it's our first one in this house, hence the house ornament. Just focus on the cute marker work I did on those bricks!)

Well, that is about it for the tour. Thanks for coming over. Sorry there were no gifts for you to open, and now that I think about it, I didn't even offer you hot chocolate! What kind of host am I? You'll have to forgive me...this was my first year after all.

Merry Christmas!

All I want for Christmas is...

Bertrand Russell (an important philosopher according to Wiki!) once said “To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.” But Courtney Bowden adds, “To be without EVERYTHING you want, is a bummer” So without further ado, I present the much awaited unveiling of our Christmas Wish Lists!

(oh, and before anyone thinks that we're recession-oblivious, materialistic, greed mongers -is it too late?- let me assure you that all of this is just for fun. No need to send hatemail or coal. Cash is always welcome though...Kidding!!)

[clockwise from top left: 1: You Make Me postcard, camera sticker stamps, white noise. 2: hello map. 3: emma and sophie folders, M by Staples folder. 4: Bellante bag, Ospedaletti bag. 5: food processor. 6: Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. 7: Pacifica candles. 8: Jonathon Adler - rhino box, squirrel figurine, snail figurine. 9: 50's birdcage pillow. 10: Sephora Ultimate Blockbuster. 11: Leda earrings, Full moon necklace.]

Courtney's List:

  1. One of the next decorating projects I'm embarking on (the list is endless) is creating a gallery of photos and art for our stairway. I want an eclectic mix of homemade items, photography, and "real" art. I think these pieces would be cute as part of the collection.
  2. I love this map. It's by some foreign designer and probably cost a billion dollars (I'm not great at currency conversion) but who doesn't love learning how to say "Hello" in every language on earth?
  3. One of the items on my to-do list is to organize all my papers...BOR-ing! But with these, maybe it could actually be fun! Or, at least it would encourage me to keep them out where I might actually use them.
  4. I have about a billion purses (I went through a phase in high school where I thought I was a debutante or something) but truthfully I don't have a good bag for "going out". I have a ton of totes, and a fabulous everyday bag, but these simple black clutches would be perfect for when I'm not lugging around all my worldly possessions. And they get bonus points for having a wrist strap!
  5. As part of my new endeavor to actually cook a meal from time to time (mac and cheese doesn't count) I think it might be time to get a food processor. Putting breadcrumbs in the blender just isn't cutting it (ooooh kitchen pun!).
  6. I love to read, these are a couple on my radar right now. Carrie Fisher's memoir sounds hilarious, and I'm a sucker for anything Gladwell writes.
  7. I have a ton of random candles laying around the house, half burned, glass covered in wax....It would be delightful to have a brand new delicious scented one like these. The beautiful packaging alone is worth the price, but the scents- Tuscan Blood Orange...Hawaiian Ruby Guava...Mexican Cocoa?- make it even better.
  8. Anyone who has stepped foot in my house knows what a sucker I am for animals- specifically white porcelain animals, and Jonathon Adler is the master of this art. I swoon over all of his creations, it was almost impossible to pick a favorite (or three).
  9. I love quirky pillow prints, and this one would be fun mixed with some other bright colors or patterns.
  10. I may not find time to make myself pretty everyday, but I do love makeup! When I was kid, I had a little makeup kit that I played with all the time (though I wasn't yet allowed to wear makeup outside of the house). I would have my friends over and we would give each other make-overs. I'm pretty sure even though I'm a "grown-up" now, I could still find some friends to come over and play if I had this awesome kit!
  11. No Christmas is complete without jewelry! I love the patina on the leaf earrings, and the necklace comes from this amazing website where you can create your own one of a kind pieces. Check it out here.

[clockwise from top left: 1: Car Jack Lift 2: HDTV 3: Table Saw 4: Throwing Star Magnets 5: Blackberry Storm 6: Circular Miter Saw 7: Retro Eagles T 8: Car Ramps 9: Dazzle Video Capture Device.]

Dustin's List:

  1. I want a car jack so that when I work on our cars in the comfort of my own garage I can jack up the cars with relative ease. I'll rotate my own tires and do other man stuff.
  2. This isn't much of a surprise. What football loving man doesn't want a high def TV? I'm such a geek about this that I even know the model number. (LN40A650) I'm trying to be patient for when it really gets marked down after Christmas. Right now, it's hefty price tag is a bit much, but I still want it.
  3. I have a few projects in mind where I'll need to make some very straight cuts. I have a hand circular saw, but my ability to cut straight is not that great. I don't want to do a hack job, so the table saw would be perfect. "Name one project!" you say. How about a platform bed for our third bedroom? Maybe if I blog on my own I'll show you a design.
  4. Secretly, (well not any more) I still want to be a ninja. Every guy does really. Moving in and out of the shadows, knowing the black arts, possessing the ability to kill a man with your pinkie finger, etc. However, the closest I'll get is having magnets that look like throwing stars. Maybe give the illusion that I'm a ninja.
  5. Ugh... this is the one gadget that pains me. The geek inside me is dying for a phone that connects to the Internet and does a bunch of awesome stuff. The Storm is just that. It'll also help me stay organized with life. Right now, if Courtney is not next to me or a pone call away then I'm probably lost and on my way to Wichita for some doctors appointment that I think I have. The pain comes in because getting the phone is not enough, you have to upgrade your cell plan, which would double my bill, and I can't justify that with "Because I want it!" So I think this one will be relegated to the "Wish List" for quite some time.
  6. This is a must have at some point. The only angle I'm cutting with my current selection of saws is crooked. With a circular mitres saw, I'l be able to cut at any angle in seconds with a few thousand RPMs behind it. I love being a guy.
  7. Probably the one item on the list that is actually attainable. This t-shirt is so cool. Go Eagles!!
  8. It's been years since I changed my oil myself. Most of that is because if I laid under my car, my legs would be hanging in the street and I would probably get run over. So with our garage, there's no more fear of that happening. It's time to change that oil myself, and these babies will make that much easier.
  9. This is a great little device. Courtney has some shows saved on the DVR that I would love to take off and free up some space. With the Dazzle, I could record the programs right from the TV to my computer and then burn them to DVD. Saweet!

So those are the things we've been drooling over. What's on your list this year?

Progress

Remember The List? Well we are making some headway. I already showed you the fruits of my video labor (#3 on my list), but there are some bigger developments in the works on both our parts.
Courtney:
#6 Try at least three new recipes
I've attempted a few so far, but I actually ended up trying three in one day! My first was Brie en Croute, which I think turned out quite nicely!

The next two were a combo deal: Big Martha's Mashed Potatoes (if SnoopDogg can make them, so can I), inside Homemade Pierogies. I've always liked pierogies (what's not to like about pasta and potatoes...plus sour cream?!), but since moving to Pittsburgh, the love has grown (Pierogies are serious business here: 'Burghers eat 11 times more pierogies than other city in the country. And one of the between inning events at Pirates games is a Pierogi Race). I guess I figured when in Rome... So I wanted to attempt to make my own. Most people here have a grandma with a secret recipe, but I had to rely on recipezaar. They turned out great! But I won't lie, Mrs. T's are just about as good with one-tenth the effort. http://www.burghilicious.com/2008/05/pleb-to-posh-pierogies.html

You can almost smell the deliciousness- even in a camera phone picture!

#19 Do a craft..

I love the "found letters" type photos on flickr, and thought it would be fun to make a collage of initials. Kinda busy, kinda crazy, but I think it'll be cute framed with a big white mat.

Dustin:

#1 Install digital thermostat
I ordered a LUX Smart Temp Touch Screen (Consumer Reports best Buy!). I installed it today and it was really quite easy. I had to do some spackling work around it where the old thermostat was. The old one worked just fine, but I kept forgetting to turn the heat down when I leave for work, so this new one will have a program for each day of the week so I don't have to remember. Saving energy AND saving money...yea!

#14 watch an Eagles football game
On Sunday I watched as my Eagles beat the first place NY Giants. Their playoff hopes are still alive as they take on Cleveland next week on Monday night!

#19 eat lunch with somebody at work
So, I pretty much eat lunch at my desk by myself. It's not that I don't have any friends or anything... it's just that work gets really busy a lot and I work while I eat. This week though, I saw a couple of friends and they were gracious enough to invite me to eat with them! (Thanks Amy and Brad!)

And a couple items showed up on both of our lists:

My #1, and Dustin's #7 tasks were to go out on a fancy dinner date. Friday we finally made time for it, and went to Umi, a sushi place in a swanky nearby neighborhood. Dustin upped the ante by completing #11 on his list: dressing nicer- He wore a new M&O blazer. Très chic! We had a good time, but decided cheap sushi is more our style- I love a giant roll with tons of rice stuffed with chream cheese. Not exactly authentic, but at least you're full when it's over!

The other thing we both had as a goal was my #15- Decorate the guest bedroom, which is currently more of a dumping ground than a bedroom. First step: Dustin's #17- strip the wall paper. We were scared this was going to be a giant undertaking, especially because we have plaster walls. But we gave it a shot today, and had it all peeled off within an hour- no chemicals necessary! Next up- paint and furniture!

Bye bye "baby triplets" wallpaper!

Oh, the carnage!

So that's about it so far. Having a list has been so rewarding for me. Some of the things are to-do list type items, which are satisfying to cross off. And some of the list is just fun stuff, that I don't always make time for. If you haven't made a list of your own yet, I highly recommend it!

Oh that Coach Tomlin...

I'm slowly falling in love with this man:

I think he's feeling it too...
To Dustin's horror, he might end up married to a Steelers fan. Not today though....We won tickets to the game, but I couldn't justify sitting in the "21/feels like 7" degree weather that is being predicted. I did want to dress up like Ralphie in A Christmas Story ("I can't put my arms down!") and eat free food, but in the end it just didn't seem worth it. We decided to let the real fans stick it out, and gave the tickets to a couple of friends who truly bleed black and gold (well, they would if it wasn't too cold for liquids).
In the meantime, I'll watch the game on TV, and enjoy online videos of my new love.

Thanks-singing

#3= Done. This little ditty is from Thanksgiving weekend. I guess we get a little silly after eating our weight in stuffing. Enjoy!
