Piper's Nursery

Our daughter Piper's nursery was definitely a labor of love, and we're in love with how it turned out.  Our goal for the room was to give it a sense of history and character, blended with modern touches, so we incorporated some vintage finds (like the framed scarves, midcentury dresser, alphabet blocks, and the brand-new, but classic-looking crib) with new items to create an eclectic space that (we hope!) is  timeless and unique. We made or modified a majority of items in the room, which not only kept us to a really tight budget, but also resulted in a customized room with a ton of personal touches.

We're thrilled that other people seem to love it as much as we do. Feel free to check out the room elsewhere on the web, and puruse our list of resources and tips below. If you have a question I didn't answer...feel free to comment or email me!

Project Nursery: Project of the Week

Paint:
  • Walls – Behr, mixed to match Disney’s "Mickey’s Shadow". Eggshell finish.
  • Ceiling stripes – White is plain white ceiling paint. Grey is Behr- no official color- just a crazy mix of a few failed attempts of light grey, mixed with white ceiling paint until I liked it! Both are flat finish.
Furniture:
Projects:
  • Book Ledges- custom made with lumber and trim from Lowe’s. You can buy similar items from West Elm, or even Ikea, but if you know (or married!) a handy man, making your own isn’t that hard, and is much cheaper. Basically we bought 1x2's and painted them white. Then we added (using glue and nails) a piece of trim to the front to act as a lip, and one in the back to have something to adhere to the wall. Then we just screwed the back plate of the finished shelf to the wall. Done deal!
  • Chalkboard wall – magnetic paint undercoat, with chalkboard topcoat (both Rusto-oleum). (I suggest deciding you want it to be magnetic first, not painting a chalkboard, then forcing your husband to paint over it with magnetic paint, and redo the chalkboard on top. Just a tip!)
  • Frame gallery- various Ikea frames, embroidery hoops and vintage finds- all painted white, convex mirror – West Elm, Metal “I” and “U” letters – Urban Outfitters. All frames are affixed to the wall with velcro (so we can remove them later, but there's no danger of little hands knocking them off the wall).
  • Window treatments and crib skirt – handmade, fabric is "1001 Peeps Ilusion in Orange/White" (sadly, it's no longer available). I made the pelmet boxes following this tutorial. And the crib skirt  I made using this method.
  • Rug – Urban Outfitters. It's actually six small rag rugs (2ft x 3ft each) assembled into one giant rug. We used rug tape on the back to connect them into a grid, which worked well because the shaggy-rags cover up any of the seams. It was so easy, and ended up costing the same as a regular room-sized rug. (there was some trial and error in getting the perfect mix of colors...I actually ordered 12 rugs to find my favorites, and chose the six that went together best. Gotta love free shipping, and an in-store return policy!)
  • Mobile – handmade, using a hanging photo "spider". Inspired by this project.
Accessories:
  • Lamp & alarm clock – Target
  • Giraffe rocker – Craigslist (but apparently originally from Target)
  • Pillows – All repurposed from various rooms: Stripe from Urban Outfitters, Floral from Target, Bird from etsy. (don’t worry…for safety we don't have them in the crib when Piper is sleeping.)
  • Globe pillow – handmade by me!
  • Quilt – handmade gift from a friend
  • Felt bins – T.J.Maxx
  • Art on bookcase – repurposed Charlie Harper memory cards pinned into a shadowbox.
  • Pink vase- Ikea (circa 2005).
  • Art above books – album frames with vintage scarves.
  • Toy box – old Ikea storage box, painted with chalkboard paint
  • Pom pom blanket – Meijer
